Responsible Beverage Service (RBS) Certification

RBS (Responsible Beverage Service) Certification is required to serve alcohol in licensed premises in California. Certification is awarded to an alcohol server who has successfully completed an approved RBS training course and passed the Alcohol Server Certification Exam.

All alcohol servers in licensed premises in California must have valid RBS certification.

  • ABC may adopt rules necessary to administer alcohol server certification requirements and apply fees to cover administrative costs (currently $3 for the exam. RBS Training Provider fees are additional and vary).
  • Employees must be certified within 60 days of commencing employment.
  • Licensees must maintain records of certification and make them available to authorities.

A nonprofit organization that has obtained a temporary daily on-sale license or a temporary daily off-sale license from ABC shall:

  • Designate a person or persons to receive RBS training prior to the event.
    • That designated person or persons shall remain onsite for the duration of the event.
    • The 60-day grace period exemption for alcohol server certification is not applicable to daily licenses.

To gain RBS certification follow these steps:

Register on the RBS Portal

California law requires all servers to register with the Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control (ABC) first. Visit the RBS Portal to pay the $3 state fee and generate your mandatory 9-digit Server ID Number. Make sure to write this ID down, as you cannot start any training without it.

Complete Approved RBS Training

Once you have your Server ID Number, you are ready to fulfill your preparatory learning. Register for our ABC-approved RBS training course via our learning portal. We will notify ABC of your course completion within 24 hours.

Pass the Official State Exam

After we confirm your training, ABC will open access to the Alcohol Server Certification Exam in your RBS Portal dashboard. Return to the RBS Portal to take the official 50-question assessment and finalize your active certification.
